A Roadworthy Certificate (also called a Safety Certificate) confirms your vehicle meets Queensland's minimum safety standards on the day it's inspected. It's a legal requirement for selling a registered vehicle, transferring registration, or re-registering a vehicle that isn't currently registered.
You'll need one when selling your registered vehicle, transferring registration to a new owner, transferring an interstate vehicle into QLD registration, or re-registering a vehicle that's currently unregistered.
We check the vehicle against the QLD Code of Practice — brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, seatbelts, windscreen and structural condition. It's a safety snapshot rather than a full mechanical inspection, so a car can pass a roadworthy and still have issues that wouldn't show up in this check.
For a private sale, a certificate is valid for 2 months or 2,000km from the issue date, whichever comes first. It's worth timing your inspection close to your actual sale or transfer date so it doesn't lapse beforehand.
